The Story

She was the third performer of the original circus trio, and the only one who never spoke again. Columbina TFC never appears as a living character — she is the ghost the entire cursed circus was built to contain. Her death at the hands of Harlequin is the original sin of The Freak Circus, and every loop, every rivalry, and every fresh wave of visitors is an echo of that single night. To understand why Pierrot looks at you the way he does, you first have to understand Columbina the freak circus and what was taken from her.

Who Was Columbina TFC? The Third Performer

Before the Big Top had an audience, it had three performers: Pierrot, Harlequin, and Columbina TFC. She was the third of the original trio, and the only one who never chose a side. In the commedia dell'arte tradition she takes her name from, Columbina is the clever servant girl caught between two suitors — and the Freak Circus pushes that archetype to its darkest extreme. She is not a love interest, and she never appears alive. She is the dead centre the entire machinery orbits.

Visually, memories of her describe long black hair reaching her upper chest, usually tied in two low pigtails, and a pair of pink eyes that mark her, like the other performers, as something that was never fully human. Two small imp-like horns crown her, and she wears a long dress with full sleeves. In Pierrot's golden-lit recollections her edges blur the way a fading photograph does — an deliberate artistic choice, because memory distorts the longer you hold it.

She was kind, gentle, and deeply empathetic: the emotional opposite of everything the circus became. She loved simple things — homemade bread and fruit, rain on tent canvas, windy days. Her childhood was hard, and she carried that warmth anyway.

The Murder of Columbina: How the Curse Began

The story of Columbina TFC ends before it begins. Columbina the freak circus was killed by Harlequin out of jealousy — poison, inside the circus cages, while she screamed for help. That single moment fractured the circus permanently.

What happened next is worse than the killing. Trapped and starving in captivity, the troupe was encouraged by Jester to tear her remains apart and eat them in order to survive. It worked; it is how they broke out of their cage. Pierrot was there, wounded and caged, and he refused. He watched her die and refused to consume her.

Her final words were directed at Harlequin: "You're not a monster, Harlequin. You just forgot how to love without destroying. I forgive you... but he never will." That last clause refers to Pierrot — and the developer has confirmed that Pierrot's hatred of Harlequin is the engine behind their eternal rivalry. Every time a new visitor walks in, the two of them compete not merely for affection but to prove which of them loved correctly.

Her death is also the reason the circus still needs victims. A show with an empty ring has no reason to keep recruiting.

Where Columbina Appears in the Game (v0.2)

You cannot talk to her, but Columbina TFC is woven through the current build in ways most players miss. Five of them are worth hunting:

The Mirror Maze. Three hidden mirrors scattered through the Blue Tent hold fragments of her memory. Finding all three is what unlocks her hidden scene — this is the single most direct way to see her story. The last mirror shows the troupe circling her body with Pierrot caged and watching.

Jester's Puppet Play (Day 2). The character "The Beautiful Dove" in Jester's play is a retelling of her death, right down to the stage version of her killing.

Columbina's Portrait (Backstage). A painting of her hangs backstage. Examining it triggers unique dialogue depending on who you are with.

The Music Box. The melody Pierrot sings is her song, and the café music box plays the same tune. Harlequin's private dance briefly mimics her movements — he is still haunted.

The Wilted Rose. Hidden in the café trash can, it is implied to be a rose Harlequin once gave her. Its text fragment references a gift refused.

There is also Columbina's Diary Fragment in the Day 1 backstage prop room, and a naming easter egg: name your protagonist "Columbina" and the game plays a scene written just for you.

The New Columbina Prophecy: Are You Her Successor?

The most unsettling thing in the Freak Circus is how closely the protagonist resembles Columbina TFC. That resemblance is the catalyst for everything Pierrot does — he does not see a stranger, he sees a second chance.

Jester is the one who names it outright. Her "New Columbina" prophecy reads the player as a role waiting to be filled: a spiritual resonance with the circus's original Flower, a replacement for the void her death left behind. She warns that history circles back, and that both Pierrot's possessiveness and Harlequin's mania are reacting to the signal you emit the moment you arrive.

But the game insists, repeatedly, that you are not her. The naming easter egg, the mirror scenes, the prophecy — they all point at the resemblance without ever collapsing the two into one person. You are the one who gets to choose whether you finish her story or walk out of it.

Myths and Corrections About Columbina

Because Columbina the freak circus only ever appears in fragments, a lot of false detail has accumulated around her. Three corrections matter:

"It was a romance." Jester's puppet play frames her story as a love triangle with Pierrot. The developer has clarified that the two were never romantically involved, and that Pierrot has long since let go of that grief. His obsession with the protagonist was never Columbina redirected.

"She was a porcelain mannequin." A popular reading among fans describes her as a doll the Ringmaster trapped a soul inside. The game never presents this, and it conflicts with the mirrors, the diary, and the voice acting in her scenes.

"She can be saved." There is no route that revives her. Every path in the current build treats her death as fixed — the only variable is what you do with the aftermath.

One detail that is genuinely under-reported: it was Columbina who taught the Doctor that herbs can be used as medicine, which is where his interest in plants began. And she considered the Ticket Taker kind. Neither of them forgot.

Why Columbina Matters for Your Run

Understanding Columbina TFC is not just lore-collecting — it changes how the routes read.

On Pierrot's route, he experiences you as a second chance after losing her. He does not need you to be cheerful; he needs to be accepted. Choosing warmth over enthusiasm tends to land very differently once you know what he is actually grieving.

On Harlequin's route, his true ending asks you to acknowledge what he did to her without condemning him. During the Ringmaster confrontation, saying that you know he regrets it is the line that opens the route.

On the Truth Ending, her death is revealed as the original fault line — the reason the curse exists and the reason the circus keeps needing new blood.

If you want to see her properly, the order is: gather all three Mirror Maze fragments first, then read the diary fragment, then do the puppet play. Doing it out of order gives you pieces without the shape.
